The Great Outdoors

Giant oaks dot the sloping backyard, a curving path leads down the hill to a small lake, where adirondack chairs surround a paved firepit.  With a view like this out the great room window, these homeowners wanted to exploit it from every direction.

The staircase on the opposite side of the great room adjoins to the front foyer.  With an unobstructed view in mind, the staircase was designed with as much openness as possible.  Tempered glass replaces wood for the balusters and gives an airy, contemporary feel.

The risers are open and allow a view of the landscape when ascending the stairs.  The effect of the staircase is almost one of floating.

What a beautiful and creative solution to preserving an unobstructed view.
